In order to be able to get a passport in the United States, you need to fill in a passport application form. A passport is a legal document, which is mainly used for identification and international travel. Passports are available to all nationals and citizens of the United States. Therefore, anyone who is a national or citizen has the right to apply for a passport.

There is a variety of sites that offer the forms and most of them are free of charge. However, in order to be able to get legitimate passport application forms, you need to go to the official site of the Department of State. From these sites, you will be able to download the forms and then start the application process.
The passport application form can also be got in person from the local passport offices. These offices are stationed in most cities, thus, making them easily accessible. It is necessary to point out that different forms are used for different application procedures.
If you are a first time applicant for a passport, the form you fill in will be different from that of a person who is renewing their passport. First time applicants need to fill an Application for a new passport DS-11. On the other hand, if you are renewing your passport, you need to fill in a form called DS-82. It is, therefore, noted that different forms are used in the process of applying for a passport. A passport will have to be renewed whenever it expires. A passport for people who are 16 and above is valid for ten years, while that for people below 16 is valid for a period of five years. After the expiration of the passport, it will have to be renewed in the set out procedure.
Once the form has been obtained, it should be filled out as correctly as possible. In other words, you should ensure that all information is correct. This is because; this information is what will determine whether the passport will be awarded or not. It should be noted that the passport office will take time to verify all the information that you have supplied. It is; therefore, often better to tell the truth, since all the information will be verified any way.
The form is accompanied by various documents, all of which aim to prove the suitability of the applicant to be awarded a passport. Documents to accompany the form are those that prove citizenship, identity and birth among others. These include a driver’s license, birth certificate, medical records and old passport if available among others.
The us passport application form can either be forwarded in person to the responsible authority or in the mail. In most cases, the application takes a period of four weeks to be processed.
